Description
TXL 8 GA RED Automotive Wire — Motorsport Harness Cable
TXL 8 GA RED wire from Arctic Performance Parts is a cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) insulated automotive conductor built to SAE J1128 TXL specification. With a conductor cross-section of 8.37 mm² and a continuous current rating of approximately 55–73 amps (depending on installation environment and bundling), this wire is engineered for the demanding thermal and chemical environment of a race car or high-performance road vehicle. The red insulation colour provides clear, consistent circuit identification throughout a completed wiring harness.
What Is TXL Wire?
TXL (extra-thin wall cross-linked polyethylene) wire is the automotive wire standard specified by SAE J1128 for high-temperature, space-critical applications. The cross-linked insulation provides a continuous temperature rating of 125°C — significantly higher than the 80°C or 105°C ratings of standard PVC or GPT automotive wire — while maintaining a thinner overall jacket that reduces harness diameter and weight. TXL wire resists automotive fluids including fuel, oil, brake fluid, and coolant, and retains flexibility down to −40°C, making it suitable for under-bonnet, firewall, and chassis wiring in all climates. 8 GA TXL wire is among the heaviest gauges in the TXL range, suited to circuits where resistance and voltage drop at elevated currents must be minimised. At this cross-section, conductor resistance is low enough to support sustained high-current draw without the wire becoming a source of heat in the circuit.
Red Insulation — Circuit Colour Coding
The red TXL wire variant is commonly used for main positive power feed circuits and battery supply lines in professionally built motorsport harnesses. Red is the conventional positive power wire colour in automotive and motorsport wiring. Using red exclusively for positive feeds throughout a harness enforces polarity discipline that protects against accidental reverse-connection faults. Consistent colour coding discipline — assigning the same colour to the same circuit type across every vehicle — is a professional harness building practice that dramatically reduces diagnostic time during fault-finding and repair at the track.
Primary Motorsport Applications — 8 GA
TXL 8 GA wire is well suited to main battery cables, alternator output feeds, and primary chassis power supply runs. Secondary applications include starter motor feeds, high-current relay output wiring, and main earth/ground connections. Its conductor cross-section makes it a practical choice for any circuit where 8 gauge is the correct sizing based on the circuit’s current draw, length, and acceptable voltage drop budget.
TXL vs Tefzel (Mil-Spec) Wire — Choosing the Right Product
TXL wire is the correct choice for the majority of motorsport harness circuits where cost, availability, and flexibility are balanced priorities. Tefzel (M22759/32 ETFE) wire is preferred for critical signal circuits, circuits exposed to extreme heat sources (near turbocharger housings or exhaust manifolds), or applications where the lightest possible weight is essential. For chassis wiring, power distribution, and general motorsport harness builds, TXL wire in the appropriate gauge and colour provides excellent long-term reliability at an accessible price point.
