Description

Skirted Sealed Relay 20/40A — Motorsport Relay for Race Car Electrical Systems

The SLDRLY is a 20/40 amp (carry/make) skirted sealed relay. The skirted design adds a protective skirt around the relay body that helps exclude moisture, dirt, and fuel vapour from the relay housing interior, providing additional environmental protection beyond a standard unsealed relay in the motorsport environment. The sealed construction is particularly valuable for relays mounted in exposed locations in the engine bay, wheel arches, or floor of the vehicle. This relay is suited to under-bonnet relay installations exposed to water and contamination, wheel arch-mounted relays, floor-level relay panel positions, and any motorsport relay location where environmental protection is needed beyond the capability of a standard open-frame relay.

Why Relays Are Used in Motorsport Wiring

A relay allows a low-current control signal — from an ECU output, PDM channel, or manual switch — to switch a high-current load circuit without routing the full load current through the switch or ECU output. This protects sensitive control electronics from high-current draw, allows smaller-gauge control wiring to be used for switch circuits, and reduces voltage drop in the load circuit by locating the relay close to the load. In a race car, virtually every high-current circuit — fuel pump, cooling fans, ignition, horn, wipers, and auxiliary lighting — is switched through a relay rather than directly through the control switch.

SPDT Configuration — Normally Open and Normally Closed Contacts

An SPDT (Single-Pole Double-Throw) relay provides both a normally-open (NO) and a normally-closed (NC) output contact. When the relay coil is de-energised, the NC contact is closed and the NO contact is open. When the coil is energised, the contacts reverse. This dual-output capability is used in motorsport circuits for fail-safe logic — for example, wiring a cooling fan to the NC contact means the fan runs if the relay fails or the coil loses power, providing a thermal protection fail-safe. In other applications, the SPDT configuration allows a relay to switch a circuit between two states rather than simply turning it on and off.

ISO 280 Format — Circuit Compatibility

ISO 280 format relays are the standard relay size in motorsport and automotive electrical systems. They fit all ISO 280 compatible relay bases and fuse/relay panel modules, allowing relays of different current ratings and configurations to be freely mixed within the same panel assembly. The standardised pin layout across the ISO 280 range means that a base designed for a 35 amp relay will also accept a 50 amp relay of the same format — useful when upgrading relay ratings during a season.

Available from Arctic Performance Parts

Arctic Performance Parts stocks ISO 280 relays across a range of current ratings (35A, 50A, 75A), contact configurations (SPST, SPDT), and sealed/unsealed variants, alongside relay bases and complete relay kits. Supporting professional race car electrical system builders and motorsport workshops across Norway, Sweden, and Denmark. Lead time 1–2 weeks for quantities beyond current stock.
